UniSAFE‘s unique inventory of helplines and support services for victims and survivors of gender-based violence in 22 countries
UniSAFE is a three-year project funded by the European Commission aiming to eradicate gender-based violence in academia and research. Launched in 2021, the project provides up-to-date, reliable data on gender-based violence, including newly emerging forms of violence, in universities and research performing organisations. During the first stage of the project, UniSAFE has developed an innovative conceptual framework to investigate gender-based violence and mapped national policies and legal frameworks. The project team then gathered and analysed quantitative and qualitative empirical evidence on gender-based violence in universities and research organisations through the coordination of a large-scale online survey among 46 participating research performing organisations and the conduction of individual interviews. The next steps for the UniSAFE project will be to integrate the survey results with other sources, including an inventory of institutional responses to gender-based violence and an in-depth analysis of case studies in 15 European countries. This data will feed into the development of recommendations and operational tools against gender-based violence.
