Stefano Fantoni is a known physicist and nuclear astrophysicist. In July 2007 he has been awarded The Feenberg Medal for his contribution to Nuclear Physics and for the development of the Fermi Hyper Netted Chain Theory. Passionate advocate of the need for greater dialogue between science and society, founder of the first Italian Master in Science Communication, SISSA (Trieste, Italy) he has been engaged in several outreach and research activities in this field, receiving the different prizes and awards. He has been the Director of SISSA from 2004 to 2010, President of the National Agency for the evaluation of the Universities and the Research Institutes (ANVUR) from 2011 to 2016 and President of FIT from 2008 to 2011 and from 2016 since now.

Stefano Fantoni is the champion of 2020 edition of ESOF in Trieste. In the following 4 pieces of interview, he talks about diverse key issues of the conference. First, he remarks the hybrid methodology most likely could be implemented in the future as it allows larger participation. Second, he stresses the importance that Science is present when needed, such as in the special circumstances of a pandemic. Third, he highlights the role of the dialogue between Science and Society, with particularity of a very crucial topic: sustainability. Finally, he expresses the role of Trieste as a strategic position for the conference as it reinforces the interaction between different cultural Europe landscapes and promote a process towards innovation.
